Telkom to 'selectively' build mobile networks

South African telecoms group Telkom will selectively build mobile and wireless networks, but dismissed ideas on Thursday that it wants to become the fourth local mobile operator.

"We don't intend to be a full national provider," said Reuben September, the group CEO, adding
that there were untapped growth areas in the mobile telecoms areas in the South African mobile market, which is near maturity.

The company's said it would target corporate customers, high-end residential customers and high cable theft / high maintenance areas, but it was still seeking a roaming agreement with an
existing operator.

Earlier Telkom said it had agreed to sell 15% of its 50% stake in Vodacom to UK-based Vodafone group for R22.5 billion, and spin off the remaining 35% of shares to its
shareholders.
